10.6 Bar Diagram (Vertical)

Important points while drawing the bar diagram:
1. Each bar represents only one value of the data and hence there are as many bars as there are values in the data.
2. The height of the bar indicates the value of the item.
3. The width of the bar does not indicate any thing.
4. The gap between one bar and another is taken uniformly.
5. All bars should rest on the same line called the base.
6. The bars may be draw horizontally or vertically.

Example:
The number of words in a paragraph with different number of letters are given below represent the data by the diagram
No. of letters in a word12345678above 8
No. of words in a para157580457065902535

Solution:
1. Take a graph paper and draw two perpendicular lines one horizontal and other vertical.

2. Along the horizontal line mark "numbers of letters occurring in a word" and along the vertical line "number of words occurring in the paragraph".
Choose (a) width of each bar = 1cm.
(b) Gap between bars = 1cm.

3. Choose scale. Take 1cm = 5 words.

4. Find the height of each bar.
a) Height of the bar for the one - letter words
5 words - 1cm
15 words = 15*1/5 = 3cm.
b) Height of the bar for the two - letter words
5 words - 1cm
75 words = 75*1/5 = 15cm.
c) Height of the bar for the three - letter words
5 words - 1cm
80 words = 80*1/5 = 16cm.
d) Height of the bar for the four - letter words
5 words - 1cm
45 words = 45*1/5 = 9cm.
e) Height of the bar for the five - letter words
5 words - 1cm
70 words = 70*1/5 = 14cm.
f) Height of the bar for the six - letter words
5 words - 1cm
65 words = 65*1/5 = 13cm.
g) Height of the bar for the seven - letter words
5 words - 1cm
90 words = 90*1/5 = 18cm.
h) Height of the bar for the eight - letter words
5 words - 1cm
25 words = 25*1/5 = 5cm.
i) Height of the bar for the above eight - letter words
5 words - 1cm
35 words = 35*1/5 = 7cm.

5. Draw 9 bars on the horizontal line and write the title of the graph.

Directions: Draw the bar diagram for the follwoing data.

1.
No. of letters in a word12345678above 8
No. of words in a para354675507870803525
2.
No. of letters in a word12345678above 8
No. of words in a para5566655598100805545
3.
No. of letters in a word12345678above 8
No. of words in a para5086150120100130556555
