### Grade 8 - Mathematics2.2 Ratio - II

Part to part ratio: Example: Chris spends 8 hours of each day in school. What is the ratio of time Chris spends in school to the time he doesn't spend in school? Time spent in school = 8 There are 24 hours in a day Time not spent in school = 24 - 8 = 16 Ratio of time Chris spends in school to the time he doesn't spend in school = 8/16 = 1/2 Part to whole ratio: Example: Chris spends 8 hours of each day in school. What is the ratio of time Chris spends in school to the whole day? Time spent in school = 8 There are 24 hours in a day Ratio of time Chris spends in school to the whole day = 8/24 = 1/3 Compound Ratio: is the ratio of products of the corresponding terms of two or more simple ratios. Thus the ratio of 6 : 3 is 2 And the ratio of 12 : 4 is 3 The ratio compounded of these is 72 : 12 = 6 6/3 x 12/4 = 72/12 = 6 Here the compound ratio is obtained by multiplying together the two antecedents, and also the two consequent of the simple ratios. More Examples: Kim goes out shopping with \$300 in her wallet. When she is done she has \$50 left. What is the ratio of what Kim spent to what she didn't spend? 250:50 Answer 5:1 A box has 3 balls, all of which are either red or green. If the ratio of red to green balls is 1:2, how many red balls are in the box? 1/3 x 30 = 10 Ratio of boys to girls in a class is 3:4. If there are 35 students in the class, how many of them are girls? 4/7 x 35 = 20 girls There are 16 beverages in a cooler all of which are either sodas or juices. If the ratio of sodas to juices is 3:1, how many of the beverages are sodas? 3/4 x 16 = 12 sodas. Directions: Solve the following problems.
