### Middle/High School Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics (AGS)1.22 Solving Equations - Substitution Method II

Example:
Solve 1/x + 1/y = 10 and 3/x + 2/y = 24.

Solution:
Given that 1/x + 1/y = 10 -----(1)
3/x + 2/y = 24---------(2)
Let 1/x = a and 1/y = b
The given equations can be written as
a + b = 10 --------(3)
3a + 2b = 24 --------(4)
Multiply the equation (3) by 2, we get
2a + 2b = 20--------(5)
Subtract (5) from (4)
 3a + 2b = 24 --------(4) 2a + 2b = 20 --------(5) Subtract (5) from (4) we get a = 4
Substitute a = 4 in equation (3), we get
4 + b = 10
b = 10 - 4
b = 6
but
a = 1/x = 4
x = 1/4
b = 1/y = 6
y = 1/6
Therefore, solution set {(1/4,1/6)}.
