We read it as five - twelfths. 12 stands for the number of equal parts into which the whole has been divided. 5 stands for the number of equal parts which have been taken out. The number on top of the fraction 5 is the numerator and the number below 12 is called denominator. A fraction can be expressed as a division and vice-versa.
