8.1 Fraction Terms
Fraction is :
Part of a whole; or
Part of a collection or group of objects.
5/12 is a fraction. We read it as five - twelfths.
12 stands for the number of equal parts into which the whole has been divided.
5 stands for the number of equal parts which have been taken out.
The number on top of the fraction 5 is the numerator and the number below 12 is called denominator.
A fraction can be expressed as a division and vice-versa.
Proper Fractions:
e.g. 2/3 (numerator smaller than the denominator)
Improper Fractions:
e.g. 3/2 (numerator greater than the denominator)
Mixed Fractions:
e.g. 2. 3/2 (whole number together with a fraction)
Like Fractions:
e.g. 1/2, 3/2 (fractions with same denominators are called like fractions.
Unlike Fractions:
e.g. 1/4, 2/7 (fractions with different denominators are called unlike fractions.
Unit Fractions:
e.g. 1/4, 1/7, 1/12 (fractions with numberator = 1 are called unit fractions.
