1.34 Estimate to Nearest Tens, Hundreds and Thousands Place

Estimate to nearest tens
  1. Look at the number in ones place.
  2. If the number in ones place is less than 5, then it is reduced to the nearest tens.
  3. If the number in tens place is 5 or more than 5, then it is increased to the nearest tens.
Example: Estimate 97 to the nearest tens.
The number in ones place is 7 and hence we round to the nearest higher number.
Answer: 100
Example: Estimate 157 to the nearest tens.
The number in ones placeis 5 and hence we round to the nearest higher number.
Answer: 160
Example: Estimate 93 to the nearest tens.
The the number in ones place is 3 and hence we round to the nearest lower number.
Answer: 90

Estimate to nearest hundreds
  1. Look at the number in tens place.
  2. If the number in tens place is a number more than 5, then the number is increased to the nearest hundreds.
  3. If the number in tens place is a number less than 5, then the number is reduced to the nearest hundreds.
Example: Estimate 174 to the nearest hundreds.
Since the number in tens place is 7, the number is increased to the nearest hundreds.
Answer: 200
Example: Estimate 159 to the nearest hundreds.
Since the number in tens place is 5, the number is increased to the nearest hundreds.
Answer: 200
Example: Estimate 2,205 to the nearest hundreds.
Since the number in tens place is 0, the number is decreased to the nearest hundreds.
Answer: 2,200
Estimate to nearest thousands
  1. Look at the number in hundreds place.
  2. If the number in hundreds place is a number between 5 and 9, then it is increased to the nearest thousands.
  3. If the number in hundreds place is a number between 1 and 4, then it is decreased to the nearest thousands.
Example: Estimate 14,455 to the nearest thousands.
The number in hundreds place is 4, it is decreased to the nearest thousands.
Answer: 14,000
Example: Estimate 1,520 to the nearest thousands.
The number in hundreds place is 5, it is increased to the nearest thousands.
Answer: 2,000
Example: Estimate 1,734 to the nearest thousands.
The number in hundreds place is 7, it is increased to the nearest thousands.
Answer: 2,000
