High School Mathematics 9.11 Intercept Form of a Line
The equation of a line with the X-intercept a and the Y-intercept b is x/a + y/b = 1. This equation is known as the intercept form of a line.
Find the intercepts made by the line 3x - 5y + 15 = 0 on the coordinates axes. Solution:
Given that 3x - 58y + 15 = 0
We can covert the given line in intercept form
i.e., x/a + y/b = 1
3x - 5y = -15
Divide both sides by -15 we get
3x/-15 - 5y/-15 = -15/-15
-x/5 - (-y)/3 = 1
-x/5 + y/3 = 1
Therefore, the above equation is in intercept form
Thus the X-intercept is -5 and Y-Intercept is 3.
