Grade 3 - Mathematics 2.11 Order of Operations Involving +, -, and * (WIZ Math)
When performing arithmetic operations there can be only one correct answer.
In order to avoid this kind of confusion, Mathematicians have devised a standard order of operations for calculations involving more than one arithmetic operation.
Method:
Perform any calculations inside parentheses.
Perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.
Example:
Evaluate the following arithmetic expression: 4 + 5 x 3 Solution:
Solution 1
Solution 2
4 + 5 x 3 = 9 x 3 = 27
4 + 5 x 3 = 4 + 15 = 19
Incorrect
Correct
Answer: 19
Directions: Evaluate the following arithmetic expressions. Also write at least ten examples of your own using operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
