Grade 5 - Mathematics
1.20 Order of Operations - Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division

When performing arithmetic operations there can be only one correct answer. In order to avoid this kind of confusion, Mathematicians have devised a standard order of operations for calculations involving more than one arithmetic operation.

Method:

  1. Perform any calculations inside parentheses.
  2. Perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
  3. Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.
Example:
Evaluate the following arithmetic expression: 4 + 5 x 3
Solution:
Solution 1 Solution 2
4 + 5 x 3
= 9 x 3
= 27
4 + 5 x 3
= 4 + 15
= 19
Incorrect Correct
Answer: 19

Directions: Evaluate the following arithmetic expressions. Also write at least five examples of your own using operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
