4.24 Avoiding Shifts in Sentences

You must take care to avoid unnecessary shifts when writing a sentence. A shift is a change from one subject to another or from one verb to another.

  • Shift from one subject to another:
Example: A child should play carefully on the monkey bars so you won't fall and get hurt. (Here, the shift from child to you is confusing)
A better sentence would be: A child should play carefully on the monkey bars so he won't fall and get hurt.
  • Shifts in verb usage should also be avoided. This includes both verb tense (past, present, future) and voice of verbs (active/passive voice).

Shift in verb tense: She gave an amazing speech, then rushes off the stage. (Here, gave is past tense but rushes is present tense)

A better sentence would be: She gave and amazing speech, then rushed off the stage. (Now both verbs are past tense).

  • Shifts in voice of verbs: Some people like bananas, but strawberries are preferred by others. (Here the subject people is acting on the verb like, but the subject strawberries is acted upon by the verb are preferred.

A better sentence would be: Some people like bananas, but others prefer strawberries.
