Grade 4 - Mathematics
6.4 Division - Two Digit Divisors Without Remainder

Estimation Method
  1. Find the estimated quotient
  2. Test if the estimated quotient is true for the given divisor and dividend.
Example: 630/45
  1. Estimated quotient is 600 /50 = 12
  2. Check if 12 times 45 gives 630.
  3. 12 times 45 gives 540.
  4. Choose a higher value for quotient.
  5. 13 multiplied by 45 gives 585.
  6. Choose the next higher value.
  7. 14 times 45 gives 630.
Standard Division:
  1. Look at the dividend, if this is lesser than the divisor consider the next digit too.
  2. Divide these numbers by the divisor, subtract and then bring down the next digit.
  3. Continue the above steps till the dividend is completely divided by the divisor.

Answer: 14R0

How to divide a three digit number by a two digit number (e.g. 630 รท 45):

  • Place the divisor before the division bracket and place the dividend (630) under it.
  • Look at the first digit of the dividend(6). It is smaller than 45 so can't be divided by 45 to produce a whole number.
  • Next take the first two digits of the dividend (63) and determine how many 45's it contains. In this case 63 holds one 45's. Place the 1 above the division bracket.
  • Place 45 below the 63 of the dividend.
  • Draw a line under the 45 and subtract it from 63. This will give 18.
  • 18 is smaller than 45 so can't be divided by 45 to produce a whole number.
  • Bring down the 0 from the dividend 630 and place it next to the 18
  • Divide 180 by 45 and place that answer above the division bracket and to the right of the one.
  • Multiply the 4 of the quotient by the divisor (45) to get 180.
  • Subtract 180 from 180 which gives the remainder 0.
