2.63 Multiplication and Division as Inverse Operations

  • An inverse operation reverses another operation.
  • Addition and subtraction are inverses of each other.
    Example:
    The addition fact 9 + 5 = 14
can be written as subtraction fact as
    14 - 5 = 9 or
    14 - 9 = 5
  • Similarly, multiplication and division are inverses of each other.
    Example:
    The multiplication fact 11 × 5 = 55
can be written as division fact as
    55 ÷ 5 = 11 or
    55 ÷ 11 = 5

Directions: Answer the following questions. Also write at least ten examples for multiplication and division as inverse operations.
Q 1: 6 x 11 = 66. What is the inverse operation?
6 ÷ 66 = 11
66 ÷ 6 = 11
11 x 6 = 66

Q 2: 36 ÷ 6 = 6. What is the inverse operation?
6 x 6 = 36
7 x 6 = 42
6 x 7 = 42

Q 3: 7 x 8 = 56. What is the inverse operation?
56 ÷ 7 = 8
56 ÷ 7 = 5
8 ÷ 7 = 1

Q 4: 4 x 5 = 20. What is the inverse operation?
