2.66 Estimating Decimal Products

Estimate is an amount that is close to another amount but not exact. In the following questions, you are asked to find an approximate value of the product of two decimal numbers.

Method:

  1. Round the two factors to the nearest integers
  2. Perform integer multiplication.

Example:
8.345 x 4.983 = ?
Rounding the factors gives,
8 x 5 = 40
Therefore, a good estimate of the product of the decimal numbers 8.345 and 4.983 is 40. Answer: 40
