2.22 Division of Fractions

For dividing a fraction by a fraction or by a whole number (other than zero), we find the multiplicative inverse or reciprocal of the fraction/whole number (other than zero) and then multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction.
Thus, the division of a fraction by a fraction/whole number (other than zero) is converted into a problem of multiplication of fractions.
To find the reciprocal of a fraction, we interchange its numerator and the denominator. In case of a whole number say 8, we can find the reciprocal by considering 8 as 8/1. The reciprocal of 8 is 1/8.

Reciprocal: Reciprocal of a number is the inverse of it.
Example: Reciprocal of 3 is 1/3.

Method

  1. While dividing two fractions, we reciprocate the second fraction.
  2. Find the product of the two fractions.
  3. Simplify to lowest tems.
Example: 3/5 ÷ 4/9 = ?
  1. Write the reciprocal of 4/9 which is 9/4.
  2. Multiply 3/5 x 9/4 = 27/20.
Answer: 27/20
