12.12 Exponent/Index and Base

The number which is written above and to the right of a symbol is called an exponent or an index. The number which is being multiplied with itself is called base.

When a number has no exponent, the exponent is understood to be one. Thus x and x1 are the same.

Examples:
In x3, x is called the base and 3 is the exponent or index.
In (3y)2, 3y is called the base and 2 is the exponent or index.
