### MEAP Preparation - Grade 7 Mathematics2.30 Monomial, Binomial, Trinomial, and Multinomial

Algebraic Expression: A combination of terms obtained by the operations of "+" or "-" or both is called an algebraic expression. Examples: (i) 5x+6y (ii) 3a-7b. Monomial: An expression containing only one term is called a monomial. Example: 7, x, 7x, -6x, ab, etc. A monomial is a number, a variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables with whole number exponents. monomial is a single term which has no plus sign (+) or minus sign (-). Not a monomial: 8 + x, 2/n, 5x, a-1, Öx, -3x-3, x2.5 Binomial: An expression containing two terms is called a binomial. Examples: 7x+5, 6y-p, etc. Trinomial: An expression containing three terms is called a trinomial. Examples: 2x+3y-4z, 1/2-m/3+4n, etc. Multinomial (or Polynomial): An expression containing more than three terms is called a multinomial or a polynomial. 7x+8y+9z-4, 9ab+6c+3d-25, etc. Directions: Observe the following expressions and tell whether each of them is a monomial, binomial, trinomial, or multinomial. Also write at least 5 examples of each type.
