In the Montgomery Boycott, Africans Americans had a strong leader. He was a young minister named Martin Luther King Jr. In those times African Americans were treated unfairly. Martin set out to change that!
Martin Luther King was born in 1929. In 1953 Martin married Corett Scott. In that very same year, Rosa Parks got arrested for refusing to get up from her bus seat when a white wanted it. This incident started the Montgomery Boycott. In 1955 Martin got his doctorate degree. Martin Luther King Jr. was now called Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.!
Martin gave a speech called "I Have a Dream". He gave that famous speech in 1963. In 1964 Dr. King got the Nobel Peace Prize. The dream of Martin finally came true, the law had changed. The color of a person's skin didn't matter anymore!
Some people liked the old way better, so they decided to kill Martin. In 1968 Martin died. He was shot. Many people ran to save him but it was too late. The person who shot Martin went to jail.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. lived for 39 years. Dr. King moved our country one step closer to his dream of equality. To honor him and his work, the United States goverment has made the third Monday in January a holiday in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
