A sentence is a group of words that express a complete thought.
Examples:
Sally was fond of her flower garden. (Sentence)
A new teacher today in gym class. (Not a sentence)

A statement tells some kind of information. It is followed by a period (.).
Examples:
It is a rainy day. We are going to stay indoors.

A question asks for a specific piece of information. It is followed by a question mark(?).
Example:
Did you do your homework?
