MEAP Preparation - Grade 7 Mathematics 1.55 Operation on Fractions
Operations with Fractions:
Addition and Subtration:
To add or subtract unlike fractions, first we convert them into like fractions and then perform the required operation on like fractions so obtained.
Example:
2/7 + 3/7 = 5/7
1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6
4/7 - 3/7 = 1/7
1/2 - 1/3 = 3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6
Multiplication of Fractions:
The product of two or more fractions is a fraction whose numerator is the product of their numerators and denominator is the product of their denominators.
Example:
2/3 x 4/5 = (2x4)/(3x5) = 8/15
9/27 x 2/3 = 18/81 = 2/9
When the product of two fractions or a fraction and a whole number is 1, then either of them is called the reciprocal of the other.
Example:
2/3 x 3/2 = 1
4/7 x 7/4 = 1
The number zero (0) has no reciprocal.
Example: 0/0
Division by zero is not defined.
Division of Fractions:
Dividing a fraction or a whole number by a fraction or a whole number (other than zero) is the same as multiplying the first by the reciprocal of the second.
24/7 ¸ 49/12 = 24/7 x 12/49 = 14
3 ¸ 4/3 = 3 x 3/4 = 9/4
4/3 ¸ 3 = 4/3 x 1/3 = 4/9
Directions: Solve the following problems and simplify the answers. Also write at least 5 example for all the operations on fractions.
