Grade 5 - English Language
4.6 Figurative Language - Metaphors

Writers use many techniques to make their writing interesting to read. One of these techniques is to use what is called figurative language, which is a special way of using words. There are four common types of figurative language. These are the simile, metaphor, personification, and hyperbole.

A metaphor makes a direct comparison between two unlike things. A noun must be used in the comparison. The words 'like' and 'as' are NOT used.

For example,
After using this fertilizer, your lawn will be a green carpet.
