Grade 5 - English Language
4.8 Figurative Language - Hyperbole

Writers use many techniques to make their writing interesting to read. One of these techniques is to use what is called figurative language, which is a special way of using words. There are four common types of figurative language. These are the simile, metaphor, personification, and hyperbole.

A hyperbole is an exaggeration used for emphasis.

For example,
They rowed for days, but the sea was never ending.
John won't be able do it in million years.

Directions: Write a short story and use hyperboles to make it interesting. As a homework, read a book and find examples of hyperbole.
