Grade 6 - Mathematics
6.4 Subtraction of Mixed Numbers

Subtraction with two Mixed Numbers

Method 1:
Subtract the integer parts and the fraction parts separately and then add the results.
Examples:
  1. 7 3/7 - 4 2/7 = ?
    Subtracting the integer or whole parts, 7 - 4 = 3
    subtracting the fractional parts, 3/7 - 2/7 = 1/7
    = 3 1/7
  2. 2 3/4 - 1 2/3 = ?
    Subtracting the integer or whole parts, 2 - 1 = 1
    Subtracting the fractional parts, 3/4 - 2/3
    LCD of 4 and 3 is 12
    3/4 - 2/3 = 9/12 - 8/12 = 1/12
    Therefore, 2 3/4 - 1 2/3 = 1 1/12
  3. 4 1/4 - 2 3/4 = ?
Here, the fraction 1/4 is less than 3/4.
Make the first fraction larger than the second fraction. Therefore, 4 1/4 = 3 5/4
    (Borrow 1 whole from 4 wholes, leaving 3 wholes. Change the 1 whole to 4/4 = 1 and add it to 1/4. There for 4/4 + 1/4 = 5/4)
    4 1/4 - 2 3/4 = 3 5/4 - 2 3/4
    Subtracting the integer parts, 3 - 2 = 1
    Subtracting the fractional parts, 5/4 - 3/4 = 2/4 = 1/2
    Therefore, 3 5/4 - 2 3/4 = 1 1/2
Method 2:
Convert both mixed numbers into improper fractions and perform the subtraction.
Example:
2 2/3 - 1 1/3
= 8/3 - 4/3
= 4/3

Subtraction with a mixed number and a whole number

To subtract from a whole number, first convert the whole number to a mixed number.
Examples:
  1. 5 - 2 1/8 = ?
    Borrow 1 from the 5 wholes leaving 4 wholes. 8 is the denominator, therefore, 8/8 = 1
    Thus, 5 = 4 8/8
    5 - 2 1/8 = 4 8/8 - 2 1/8
    = 2 7/8
  2. 5 1/4 - 2 = ?
    Subtract the integer parts or whole parts, 5 - 2 = 3
    Therefore, 5 1/4 - 2 = 3 1/4
