Method:
  1. Read the problem carefully.
  2. Translate the story problem into mathematical statements.
  3. Compute the required results.
Example: The distance between two places is 35 miles. If a person has covered 18 miles, how many more miles are left?
Subtract 18 from 35
Answer: 17 miles

Directions: Solve the following. Also write at least ten examples of your own.
Q 1: On a scary Halloween night party there were 16 glasses of punch on the table. 10 people had 10 glasses of punch. How many glasses of punch are left?
16-10 = 6
16- 16=0
10+10=20
16+10=26

Q 2: After eating way too much candy, Suzy had to go to the dentist and have 5 cavities filled. The dentist told her to come back the following week to have 4 more done. How many cavities did poor Suzy have?
5-4=1
5+4=10
5+4=9
5+4=11

Q 3: There were 5 pumpkins sitting on the porch. Mom brought home 8 more. How many pumpkins are there altogether?
8x5=40
8-5=13
8-5=3
5+8=13

Q 4: The spooky house had 7 candles burning in the windows. Someone blew out 5 of them. How many candles were left burning?
7-5=12
5+7=100
7-5=2
5+7=100
