Adverbs

Like adjectives, adverbs are describing words. However, adverbs describe verbs whereas adjectives describe nouns or pronouns. Adverbs tell how, when or where an action takes place.

Types of adverbs:

  • Adverbs of time tell when.
    Example:
    The train left yesterday.
    Yesterday is an adverb of time. It tells when the train left.

  • Adverbs of place tell where.
    Example:
    The boy walked away.
    Away is an adverb of place. It tells where the boy walked.

  • Adverbs of manner tell how.
    Example:
    The boy walked quickly.
    Quickly is an adverb of manner. It tells how the boy walked.

Directions: Find the adverbs in the following sentences. Write ten more sentences containing adverbs and identify the type of adverb in each sentence. As a homework, read a book and find as many adverbs as you can and write the sentences in which they appear and underline them.
