Finding Area/Perimeter of Squares and Rectangles

Square
Area of a square = side x side, A = a x a
Perimeter of a square is 4 x side: P = a + a + a + a = 4a

Rectangle
Area of a rectangle = length x width, A = l x w
Perimeter of a rectangle the sum of the lengths of its sides, P = l + w + l + w = 2l + 2w = 2(l + w)

Example: Find the area of square of side 4 inches.
Area of square = side x side
Area = 4 x 4
Answer: 16 square inches

Example: Find the perimeter of rectangle whose length is 6 inches and width is 4 inches.
Perimeter of rectangle = 2(l+b)
Perimeter = 2(6+4)
Answer: 20 square inches.
