Fractions and decimals represent the same things: numbers that are not whole numbers.
Method to convert fraction to decimal:
- Divide the numerator of the fraction by the denominator
- Continue division till we get a remainder zero with a decimal point in the quotient.
- If the quotient is repeating then round the answer to the nearest precision.
Another method is to write an equivalent fraction such that the denominator has multiple of 10
Example: Convert 1/5 to equivalent decimal.
1/5 x 2/2 = 2/10
Answer: 0.2
Method to convert decimal to fraction:
- Write down the decimal divided by 1.
- Multiply both top and bottom by 10 for every number after the decimal point. (For example, if there are two numbers after the decimal, then use 100, if there are three then use 1000, etc.)
- Simplify or reduce the fraction to its lowest terms.
Example: Convert 0.05 to equivalent fraction.
There are two numbers after the decimal point, hence two zeroes in the denominator.
Answer: 5/100
