MEAP Preparation - Grade 6 Mathematics
2.77 Mixed Number to Improper Fraction

Example: Convert mixed number 2 3/5 to improper fraction.
Solution: This can be done in two ways:

Method 1

  1. Multiply the denominator of fractional part (5) with the integer portion (2)
  2. 5 * 2 = 10
  3. Add the numerator 10 + 3 = 13
  4. Therefore the improper fraction has numerator 13 and denominator of the fractional part (5)
  5. 2 3/5 = 13/5
Answer: 13/5

Method 2

  1. The mixed number, 2 3/5, can be changed to an improper fraction by converting the integer portion to a fraction with the same denominator as the fractional portion and then adding the two fractions
  2. So the integer portion 2 is converted to 10/5.
  3. The sum of the two fractions becomes 10/5 + 3/5 = 13/5.
Answer: 13/5
