Grade 5 - Mathematics
13.2 Solving for X

While solving an equation, the variables are kept on one side and the numbers are transferred to the other side of the equation.

Example:
a + 2a + 7 - 5 = 10
Solution:
Adding like terms:
a + 2a + 7 - 5 = 10
3a + 7 - 5 = 10
3a + 7 - 5 = 10
3a + 2 = 10
Adding -2 to both sides of the equation we get:
3a + 2 -2 = 10 -2
3a = 8
Dividing both sides of the equation by 3 we get:
3a/3 = 8/3
a = 8/3

Note:
If we perform some operation on one side of the equation, the same operation should be performed on the other side of the equation as well.

Directions: Find the value of the variable in each question. Also write at least 10 examples of equations of your own and solve for the variable.
