1.19 Order of Operations

When you have more than one arithmetic operation, use the following rules to decide on the order in which you should perform the operations:
  1. First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
  2. Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
  3. Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.
P E M D A S

Letters in PEMDAS stand for:
P - Parenthesis
E - Exponents
MD - Multiplication or Division from left to right
AS - Addition or Subtraction from left to right
The following phrase helps students remember the PEMDOS rule further:
Please Excuse (My Dear) (Aunt Sally).

Example : Solve (9 + 7) × 2 + 4 × 5
Solution :
=(9 + 7) × 2 + 4 × 5
=16 × 2 + 4 × 5
=32 + 20
Answer: 52
