Decimal Place Value
- In decimal number system, the value of a digit depends on its place, or position, in the number.
- Each place has a value of 10 times the place to its right.
- To the left of the decimal point are:
units, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions and so on.............
- To the right of the decimal point are:
tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten thousandths, hundred thousandths, and so on.............
Example:
In the decimal number 0.9876
The first digit after the decimal point is called the tenths place value. There are nine tenths in the number O.9876.
The second digit tells how many hundredths there are in the number. The number O.9876 has eight hundredths.
The third digit is the thousandths place. There are seven thousandths.
The fourth digit is the ten thousandths place which is six in this example.
Therefore, there are nine tenths, eight hundredths, seven thousandths, and six ten thousandths in the number 0.9876.
